Rotterdam avant pop fantasists Crying Boys Cafe have a quirky melancholy about them, like an enduring hangover after a break-up at the most majestic tropical resort imaginable. The foursome recently released the EP CAFE exclusively on vinyl label Final 500. Consider this a nice appetizer in anticipation for their LP The Keys Not The People slated for release this Fall.
Author Jerry Hormone asked the band why they always haul that palm tree along to wherever they play. Singer Jasper Hupkens had a thoughtful reply: “It has to do with being somewhere you’d rather not be. The dreaming and longing for someplace different and remote.”
This deep-seated rendition of I Was A Singer provides a wonderful musical backdrop of CBC’s handpicked location: the music pavilion at Rotterdam’s Rondo square at Heijplaat.

The music Pavilion used to be a bastion for open air performances, founded in 1929 and re-opened in 1939 to commemorate the birth of Dutch Princess Beatrix. In 2005, the dome has been restored to its original state. (Photographs: Topaas and Woonbron)
